For low-growing color in the sun consider moss rose and purslane. Gladiolas love full sun. Plant the bulbs 1 foot apart. They bloom in May and June. Also consider Cosmos to attract butterflies and Zinnias attract hummingbirds and butterflies.  For shade: coleus, caladiums, begonias or pentas are great.
